FEB. 3, 2026 – The federal government is trying to defuse American anger over safety approvals for General Dynamics Corp.\u2019s Gulfstream jets after U.S. President Donald Trump blasted Canada for having \u201crefused\u201d to certify the planes and threatened retaliation against Bombardier Inc. and other domestic aircraft manufacturers.<\/p>\n
U.S. and European regulators have certified Gulfstream\u2019s G700 and G800 models, however Canada is still reviewing the aircraft. \u201cCanada is working with the U.S. Federal Aviation Administration, Bombardier and General Dynamics to resolve outstanding certification matters in a way that protects safety and regulatory integrity\u2026\u201d as Transport Canada spokesman Hicham Ayoun said in an e-mailed statement.<\/p>\n
Transport Minister Steven MacKinnon said Canada has a collaborative relationship with the FAA that stretches back decades in matters of aircraft certification. He said he\u2019s been given the latest information on the Gulfstream approvals and has been in touch with \u201ca number of people\u201d on the issue but cautioned he does not interfere with the certification process. \u201cWe\u2019re communicating with both of the manufacturers and all the people in the industry to make sure that everyone understands the timeline,\u201d Mr. MacKinnon told reporters in Ottawa on Tuesday. \u201cTo the extent that any ambiguities or misunderstandings may have existed, I think they\u2019ve been dissipated,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
Mr. Trump startled Canada\u2019s aerospace industry last Thursday with a social-media post saying the United States is decertifying Bombardier\u2019s Global Express jets and \u201call Aircraft made in Canada\u201d until Canada approves the new business jets made by Savannah, Ga.-based Gulfstream.
